Something seems strange – BH and everywhere else it’s $200 but here it is listed for more than $500…. Am I missing something?

Everything about this lens is great, except the MSRP is $199 – why is Amazon charging $399 for it?
I hate being ripped off, so I hope you don’t get ripped off either. This will focus on a D40, and is the equivalent of a 50mm ‘Prime’ lens on a DX sensor like the D40.
Excellent lens to buy if you have a D40 – but not for $399.

Everyone: please be alert to the fact that this is an attempt to scam as many people as possible with this outrageous price.
If everyone displays a little patience, soon the market will have sufficient supply so that these can be sold at the price they are worth, which is NO MORE THAN HALF OF WHAT THIS SELLER IS ASKING. DO NOT PLAY THEIR GAME- THEY ARE THE REASON THERE ARE NO 35MM 1.8′S AVAILABLE, THEY BOUGHT THEM ALL UP IN ORDER TO SCAM YOU. If their price does not subside to the correct amount of $[...] and/or they are not back in stock at B&H, Adorama, or J&R by the end of this month, OR if it comes back in stock but is now higher than $[...], then I will be buying the Sigma 30mm 1.4. It is more expensive, but it is a faster lens and is in stock now. It is also as good as the Nikon- see the Flickr group for the Sigma.
Nikon has had ENOUGH time to replenish stocks of this lens. It isn’t a 70-200 2.8, for crying out loud, this is a mass-produced, practically bargain-bin lens. By the time the 1.8 is in stock I will have already had my Sigma properly calibrated to correct for the focus issues. Nikon really goofed here by not making enough of these, they should have known how many people would want one. In my mind there is no reason to jump on this lunatic “I’ve got to have the 35mm 1.8 at any cost!!! Ken Rockwell said it was great so I have to do it!!!” bandwagon, it is just silly. Don’t drink the Nikon wine on this one, people.

I have been using Nikon 50mm f/1.8, Sigma 30mm f/1.4 and just got this one Nikon 35mm f/1.8. I will not make my review long. Over all, I think this Nikon 35mm f1/8 is over-rated and over-priced.
The focus is slow and have hard time focus in low light (compare to Nikon 50mm f/1.8). The Bokeh is not as creamy as Sigma 30mm f/1.4 (I set Sigma to f/1.8 to compare). If you already have Nikon 50mm, you probably don’t need this one. This 35mm f/1.8 also does the typical “Nikon underexposure” issues. You would need to adjust exposure or load a custom tone curve to get a better result. No scale mark on the lens which makes it looks cheap.For $200, I would say less than $150 should be right.
I cannot say I dislike it. I just feel it should not deserve 5 stars. Two stars should be about right. I am going to give it 1 stars to lower the average so people don’t expect too much on it.

I bought lens & waited patiently while backorders were slowly filled. Only had to wait 6-8 weeks for item to arrive so that wasn’t too bad. BUT, item was shipped in a box with NO PACKING MATERIALS! The lens in it’s original box made the entire trip rattling around inside the shipping box. Although there was no visible damage, this is not the way to treat lens. In my experience with lens, even if it worked the lens would have to be at the very least Recalibrated. And problems may not show up for some time. Remember, this is not a extremely durable metal lens! It if full of plastic components. Needless to say I returned the lens, got a refund and a cursory e-mail from Amazon. Needless to say, I’m sure Amazon shipped the lens out to someone else waiting for one. I then went out and purchased from Ritz Camera. It was backordered there as well but only had to wait 4 weeks this time. Fyi, the price was the same the only difference was that I had to pay tax. I have found that local camera shops, or even speciality online camera shops, are a much better place to buy equipment.
Reference the lens performance: Excellent! I love prime lens. I used to use telephoto but after my first prime lens, I use them almost exclusively. This lens is a bargain. BUT: the lens is not a durable piece of equipment! It will not last as long as other lens. And there are some corrections you’ll need to make but your photo software can make most of the changes that your photo’s will need.
