Have had this unit just one week and have the following information about it. I will update this rating (likely to 5 Stars) as I gain more familiar with it.
WHAT’S IN THE BOX?: This is a NIKONUSA product that I bought from Ritz camera for $224 and received 4 items in the box: 1. SB600, 2. a complete 92 page user’s manual (there is a booklet in English and one in Spanish 3. a soft carrying case. 4. flash stand. I have not yet bought any Nikon product unless it is from NIKONUSA. I cannot comment on NIKONUSA service in recent years because I have not had to use it. I guess this is because the products are of such high quality. I would not have it any other way. By the way, an acquaintence recently bought an entry-level Canon body and it would not work right out of the box! That is unacceptable. And if it ever happens with any Nikon product I buy I will be on the phone in a about one minute with NIKONUSA! Don’t think that I believe NIKONUSA to be perfect. I do not. I have already gotten into a major battle with them as to why they refuse to send me a copy of the Capture NX2 user manual. I have to download it and print 100 some odd pages or sit at a computer to learn the program. What the hell is with that! And NIKONUSA refuses to budge on it! NIKONUSA…….I’m telling the world that your attitude sucks! That said, years ago I dunked my F3 into Everglades waters and sent it back to Melville. The repair cost and turnaround time were reasonable. But that was in the early 80’s. If in the future I find the need to use NIKONUSA service and it fails with a stubboness I will give them holely hell and take every opportunity to tell the world that they suck. Like I just did. It is that simple. It would be wonderful to find a top quality domestic facility that repairs all Nikon products in addition to or as an alternative to NIKONUSA at Melville, New York. If anybody knows of such a facility please, please let me know at rlksmail@yahoo.com. Thanks.
ANYWAY, BACK TO THE SB600:
The carrying case is of very high quality, having a velcro closure and belt loop. I should say that this unit is not even close to small so that when carried in the case and mounted on the belt it protrudes signifantly. But it is not heavy on the hip and did not get in the way of my swinging arm as a I walked. I did slide it to a position on my belt that is at the right/front of the hip. I bought this unit to aid in broarder, wider or deeper fill-flash situations in nature and to be used as an off-camera macro flash. Point being that this is going to a piece of equipment that I plan on carrying alot. And the days of me carrying a lot of photo equipment are over! That is why I bought the 18-200 lens.
BUILD QUALITY: 5 STARS! Every exterior component is of outstanding quality. The unit gives me the feeling that it is rugged and very, very well constructed. I have to disagree with those who have stated that the mounting on the hotshoe feels weak or fragile (with weight of batteries added). I have the D300 and I believe the camera and flash are strong enough to assure that it will not break or crack. I should add that I will probably never use the flash mounted on the hotshoe. Again, I bought this unit as a slave to be used wirelessly and significantly away from the D300 pop-up flash (master). My photography is mostly of nature (Robert King’s work at PhotographersDirect.com).
Updated as more experience is gained.

i ordered this on October 25…now after 3 delays, they expect to ship it on December 29
when i ordered it, it was in stock, and under amazon prime was to ship free in two days
lies, lies, lies
not the first time being stiffed
i have canceled the order and will cancel amazon prime
after spending nearly $3000 at amazon this past year, i will look for other options before purchasing anything from amazon again. i’m not saying i won’t use amazon again, but it will be near the last resort when i do.

Flash received fairly promptly for the low choice of shipping timing – interesting to see that it arrived in my city in 1 day but waited 5 days for local delivery to ensure that people do not expect faster delivery for the lower prices!!
No problems on Amazon’s side – handled well.

I just received this product last night. I ordered it using free shipping and received it within 3 workdays which was fantastic. The product is also great as are the images I’ve been able to produce with my D90.
The low score has nothing to do with the product itself but the fact that I received a USED or REFURBISHED product!
I have plenty of experience purchasing products online and electronics themselves and there are visible, obvious signs of use. The plastic wrapping is not quite pristine, the scuff marks, the miscellaneous prints on the glossy plastic parts and worse yet, strange miscellaneous gunk marks.
Nothing was sealed, there was physical folding damage to the manuals and scratches on the hot shoe. Obvious signs of use.
I normally get great service from Amazon directly, this was a severe disappointment. It may have only been used for a short while but with products like these and a set life span, it is unfair to charge me full price for something that is billed as new.
I will be returning it, hopefully for a full refund or NEW replacement.
