Working with the video of camcorders such as, Sony HDR-HC1 can produce a serious business. HD video contains four times the number of pixels that standard definition offers, and it’s much more heavily compressed. Keep in mind that you need a powerful computer with a lot of memory to deal with the extra data and compression.

Pinnacle for example, recommends a minimum 512 MB of RAM and a graphics card with 128 MB of RAM for standard resolution video, although that goes up to a GB of RAM and a 256 MB graphics card when working with 1080i HD video. You can find plenty of software available that supports editing high definition videos. For example, the latest versions of Pinnacle Studio and Ulead Media Studio 8 can import and edit files in HDV format. Even though the high definition video with these types of looks great when played back on an HDTV, at the present time is there is no way store HD video on a DVD.

The only way you can store HD video for playback is on your PC or the same type of media you used in your HD camcorder. There is however, a new generation of high definition optical media format coming soon. Products that are based on the HD-DVD and Blu-ray disc formats are very expensive, and they will remain that way for the near future. HD-DVD players were announced a while back that they will cost $500 and up, and will be available very soon. You’ll also need one of the new HD-DVD drives to write to the disc, which will cost as much again. The same story with the Blu-ray disc, because both the recorders and the players are going to be expensive.

There is one other option as well. There is a DVD player from KISS, the DP-600, which can play back high definition files that have been compressed to Microsoft’s Windows Media 9 format. At least, this can provide a stop gap until the price of the HD-DVD and Blue-ray disc players and writes come down to an affordable price. The video you have through the camcorder itself can always play back the record, although you shouldn’t expect to be able to write it out on a disc with the current available equipment and preserve its quality. If you wait it out, the new generation of available media will be everything you need for your HD video.

This is something that you should be looking into for your wedding videos. It is not enough that you have a copy. The most important thing is the quality of your copy that ensures your satisfaction should you decide to view these videos years later. However, a new technology has been introduced in the market and it has also slowly invading the wedding video services. It has a better picture compared to DVDs and the resolution is bigger compared to it. High definition videos (HDV as they call it) have been one of the most popular options for your wedding videos. Although they say it is on its infancy, you can guarantee that when you look at your videos 10 years later, you will still have a vivid image of what your wedding day should be. Your wedding video is so much better than just a DVD copy.

What makes a HDV extra special? Here are the following reasons:

Resolution- display resolutions of 1280×720 or 1920×1080.
Frames per second- It captures 50-60 frames per second. Any motion can be captured clearly with this kind of video. A standard video camera can capture 30 frames per second only, some even less.
Blu-ray Format- you can go tapeless and go for the higher end of optical disc format.

Few cameras out there can give you a high definition video. If you want to have this kind of option for your wedding day, ask it from your videographer. However, once you get to have this option, consider the following things:

Determine the equipment needed to play the disc with the kind of format it has. Since this is the latest technology, you have to know its compatibility with your old equipment. This way, you can ask for another option on how to have it played.
Ask what software is needed to play high definition videos on your computer. If all else fails, your last resort will always be your computer.
Double-check the minimum configuration of your personal computers so that you can be ensured that your high definition wedding videography will work fine with it.

The only downside that you may have if your videographer uses the early HD cameras is that it uses tapes. This can be quite annoying at times because it has a higher risk for data loss. However, manufacturers of video cameras are working on it to eliminate the use of tapes rather than introduce usage of memory cards. Not that this should be your concern nor your investment, but if you want to have the best images, better than DVD, go for High definition videos. You will not regret it.

Summary

DVD copies are good but high definition videos are so much better. It is the latest technology and if you want to double or triple your satisfaction in watching your wedding videos, go for this kind. It is worth the investment.

Originally I went in to Best Buy to pick up a Mino HD so I could record studio and location “behind the scenes” photography shoots for my business. The employee I spoke to handed this to me saying “it doesn’t come out for another week, but its cheaper than the Mino that is on sale”. It was a no-brainer for me to pick up.

Its a nice little unit; compact, fits in my back pocket if needed, and the controls are very basic – click da big red button to record. Click da big red button again to stop. Simplicity at its finest.

I love that the unit has a USB built right in, but I still use a USB extension because I’m using an iMac, and since it ends up hanging upside down, I don’t want to add stress to the USB prong.

I haven’t used the built-in editing software, as I’m importing my files into iMovie and editing from that.

Quality wise, I’d say is pretty darn good considering its about the size of a box of Necco valentine sweet-hearts candy. However, I must insist that it is to be used as a stationary “fixed” lens, and not to use the digital zoom. Once that digital zoom is used, the quality, like *any* digital zoom, suffers greatly. To circumvent this, I’ve super-glued a step-down ring to the front of my Ultra HD so I can screw on a wide angle and a telephoto lens. If you don’t mind Frankenstein-ing your Ultra HD, then go for it.

I haven’t done much low-light shooting with it, but I have a feeling that it could get somewhat noisy and grainy. I’ll see more results soon when I start using this inside the studio.

I’ll be mainly using my Ultra HD on a tripod to record behind-the-scenes footage of my photography sessions, so I’ll have a way of keeping the camcorder static and not moving around a lot.

Overall, I feel this is greatly worth the $199 I paid. You have to remember that this is a dinky little device with a tiny sensor in it, so the quality won’t be as good as a larger dedicated video camera, or one of the newer DSLR’s with the built in high-def. Apples to Oranges.

With a little extra cash and some super-glue, you can get more reach and wide angle out of the unit.

Media technologists, broadcasters and even the salesmen at Circuit City have been talking about HD for years and now it has finally arrived. But what does it mean for you? Sure you can get clearer pictures and better sound on your television. But how can that affect your business? High Definition technology means more than just clearer images for the networks it can also have a direct impact on your marketing and communications strategy.

When considering your next video or multimedia project you should consider the following reasons to use High Definition technologies.
