The Canon HFS11

One of the most amazing gifts I have ever received was the Canon IVIS HFS11 Jo gave me during the holidays. Since receiving the gift, I have been diligently experimenting with camera, trying to use all its features to see how well it really works. The reason I received this camera, is that for years, Ive been using Canon cameras and have loved them. The one thing that I havent enjoyed is using MiniDV tapes. I really didnt like recording to the medium and then having to import them to the computer. I also didnt appreciate the fact that from time-to-time, there was a glitch when importing. So Ive been long wanting to go to a tapeless system. There are several cameras out there that record to disks, but none that really did what I wanted to do. Then I saw this camera on the Canon website. Not only was it an HD camera, but it recorded on solid state media. Furthermore, it also had a slot for an SD card allowing the camera to store up to 96gb of data per recording. Ive been drooling over the camera, since it does everything that I wanted, and would finally get rid of that problem that I had with the Vixia30 the mics being placed right next to the tape drive, thus creating extra noise. So lets talk about the camera It records in full HD at 24megabits per second. Thats a great resolution for digital recording. Something that Im really happy with. I was also happy that the camera CCD was upgraded from 3.1mp in the Vixia to 8.1mp in this camera. The improved CCD does a great job

When you say about the wide angle lens, which one did you use?

My HF S11 is due to be delivered tomorrow and i cant wait.

Welcome to 21th century. Have a nice stay in Korea.

    @RubenDelight
It’s a lens that screws onto the exterior of
the camera. There are a few that Canon
makes (I’m not sure about 3rd party lenses).
It’s worth picking up, but they can get pricey.
Try checking out E-Bay for great listings.

very useful video, im getting the hf s10 version of this cam this summer and im browsing around for attachments, you mentioned the wide angle, what kind of lens would that be? is it very expensive?

  5. RubenDelight says:

@cgkitti it varies between 1200-1400 dollars or you can get the hf s10 which is exactly the same but with 32gb of internal memory for bout 750 dollars

You speak the truth. I just linked this video to my twitter for the HV Buzz issue, which is how the mic is configured on the DV ones. Do many of us a favor and add HV30 to your tags. So other people know about this problem before they buy the camera. I am going to link this on the HV boards.

If more people saw this it would save them a big headache or prepare them for one.

Click Wrap is made by Divergent Media. You need a program that can handle MTS files (AVSHD) or can can convert them to a format you can use. I found mine using Google. I’d do the same using your PC’s specifications to find the best application for you.

  8. YONKERSJOHN says:

what is “clickwrap”? where can i find?

i want a cam that has good still pictures and videos ?

  11. qiranger says:

It refers to the resolution of teh video…

As for which camera… It depends on what you want to use them for. I have a camera to take stills and a camera to take videos.

  12. qiranger says:

I have no idea… I won’t let Jo tell me.

  13. ascortjkk says:

should i get this or casio exilim f1? what does the megabits mean?

  14. cgkitti says:

Your webcam keep changing the color tone of the video which was kind of weirding me out haha.

How much was this camera? I am drooling over it… I love Canon. My current camera is an Olympus, but before that, I only had Canons.

  15. qiranger says:

Yeah, Final Cut 5 and iMovie’06… no need to really up grade yet.

  16. qiranger says:

I wouldn’t mind upgrading my DSLR (I have a 20D), but I don’t like the slower consecutive frame rates they have now. To get the camera I want, I’d need to upgrade to a 1D!

  17. qiranger says:

    Ah!

  18. fehquig says:

So, are you still using iMovieHD 06 or an older version of Final Cut? I can’t stand iMovie 08 for more than the simplest of edits… That microphone touchiness would throw me into hissy fits… I would probably go for the standard resolution solid state camera that puts out .AVI files…

I’m still using point and shoot Canon digital cameras and getting good results, but some day I may decide to upgrade…

  19. KendrickMcMurphy says:

I bought a Canon Xsi(450d) about a year ago. Now Canon has a new T1i that takes both great still shots and HD video. Don’t you just hate that… i want the new camera but it would be hard to sell my camera.

  20. iFukuyama says:

I gave up on getting my camera to work with my macs, so i can only use my only file-based camera on windows.

  21. qiranger says:

Jo picked it up from someone in Japan.

  22. thebigfatlamp says:

where did you get the wide angle attachment?

  23. qiranger says:

I’m not a fan of the Xacti IS system. It looks like the camera is moving rather than stabilizing the picture.

  24. CakesBomb says:

Good review. I’ve been using a Xacti HD1010 which shoots good HD video, BUT it has HORRIBLE image stabilization. The Canon’s from what I’ve read all have great optical image stabilization so I am pretty sure my next camera will be in the Canon family (either something similar to the HFS11 or I may just get a DSLR)… cheers!

  25. qiranger says:

Thanks Alisha! I love my little Canon collection. I wish my little point and shoot camera was doing better, but I think the video capabilities are shot now. Oh well. I love it for stills. I can’t wait to take the big dog out one day.
